A Brief History of Cromarty: 800 years on one page

Dr David Alston

Cromarty History Society is delighted to welcome back David Alston as a guest speaker, whose talk poses an interesting challenge — how to summarise the history of Cromarty on one side of A4 paper? He suggests this condensed timeline will “help us to see what we know and, more importantly, what we don’t know, where the gaps are, what we might find out and what we might never know”. He can also assure the audience that this will be “a lot quicker than reading my 372-page ‘My Little Town of Cromarty’!”

David moved to Cromarty over 30 years ago and was the founder curator of the Courthouse Museum. He has published a history of Cromarty, an historical guide to Ross & Cromarty and several articles on the involvement of Highland Scots in the slave-worked plantations of the Caribbean. He is currently writing a book on the Highlands and slavery.

The talk will be followed by complimentary mulled wine and mince pies to help you into the festive spirit. Entry to this meeting is free of charge and a warm invitation is extended to all.

Cromarty History Society meets in the West Church Hall, Cromarty at 7.30pm on the the third Thursday of each month, September - April
