From Crofting to Oil Rigs

Thursday 16th October at 7.30 in Cromarty West Church Hall

From Crofting to Oil Rigs. The 1970s ‘clearance’ of Nigg

Speaker: Sandy Thomson

Sandy Thomson has been a regular contributor to Cromarty History Society talks programme ever since he retired from Strathclyde University and moved to Cromarty in 1997. A graduate of Dundee University’s outstanding distance learning course in Scottish History, he has published several articles in ‘History Scotland’ magazine - all focusing on people and events in Cromarty and the surrounding area. He is a former Convener of the Society and continues as an active member of our Committee.

Tonight’s talk arose from a chance encounter with a lady who grew up in what was the village of Balnabruaich, now the site of Global Energy’s yard at Nigg. Since then, Sandy has been gathering memories of the community and of the events surrounding the building of the oil rig yard in the 1970s.!
